UCGIS at the University of Wyoming

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) is a non-profit organization of universities and other research institutions dedicated to advancing our understanding of geographic processes and spatial relationships through improved theory, methods, technology, and data. UCGIS's mission is three-fold:

  • To serve as an effective, unified voice for the geographic information science research community;
  • To foster multidisciplinary research and education; and
  • To promote the informed and responsible use of geographic information science and geographic analysis for the benefit of society.

UW Membership Profile

UCGIS is open to input from scientists and scholars in all disciplines involved in geographic information science in member institutions. Its immediate objectives include expanding and strengthening geographic information science education, providing an organizational infrastructure to foster collaborative interdisciplinary research and education in geographic information science, and promoting the ethical use of and access to geographic information for the benefit of society. The University of Wyoming became one of 35 charter member institutions to UCGIS in 1996. UCGIS membership is open to all U.S. academic and research organizations meeting established membership criteria.
