Alternative Title:

Implied Metadata,
Subliminal Metadata,
the Rabbit Reproduction Effect
and Other Interesting Things About Metadata
(for those of us who would rather not hear the gory details).

Presented at GIS in the Rockies conference, Denver CO, Sept 15, 1998.

Metadata is an important aspect of GIS in the areas of data development, analysis and distribution. However, it continues to be a problematic area for many reasons: different formats, different tools and a difficult-to-interpret federal standard.

All of these reasons cause users to question whether it is worth their time to compile and format (or even use!) metadata. This presentation does not get into the details of metadata creation, but instead focuses on the results of metadata implementation and the lessons learned. It is meant to be a light-hearted introduction to metadata, including some visualization tools to help the "rest of us" (i.e., non-metadata specialists) to understand how metadata is an integral part of the GIS process.
