Derotmema haydeni, the Hayden grasshopper, is found in the shortgrass
prairies and desert areas of Wyoming. Populations diminish northeastward
in the mixedgrass prairie. It prefers areas with patches of barren soil
where its coloration blends with the soil. Eggs overwinter in the soil
and hatch in early June. Adults are present from mid July to September.
This species is a mixed feeder of many species of forbs and grasses.
